Hamamelis mollis 'Pallida'

Hamamelis molis 'Pallida'

Common name: witch hazel 'Pallida', Chinese witch hazel
Family: Hamamelidaceae
Leaf: decidous, broadly ovate or rounded leaves, turning yellow in autumn, with deep venation
Flower: clusters of small, nearly tiny, fragrant, yellow to orange-red flowers with 4 very narrow, thin petals, born on the leafless branches in late winter-early spring
Habit: deciduous shrub, with some about 1/3 of the leaves remaining on the branches throughout winter
Form: Broad, wide, vase-shaped
Height: 10-15'; Spread: 10-15'
Culture: Best grow in full sun to part shade in well-drained, medium moisture soils. Benefits from some shelter from winter winds. Also benefits from mulching to retain moisture. Keep in mind this shrub grows quite wide- so will need room to spread. Allowing its natural, long-branched 'whippy' shape is best- i.e. minimum pruning! Hardy in USDA zones 5-8.
Uses: woodland garden, in a sheltered location
Origin: China
