Common name: winter hazel
Family: Hamamelidaceae
Leaf: ovate, bright green leaves, up to 3" long, with distinctive sunken venation and some marginal teeth
Flowers: small drooping racemes (up to 1.25" long) of mildly fragrant primrose flowers in early spring
Habit: dense, spreading, multi-stemmed deciduous shrub
Form: rounded
Height: 4-6'; Spread: 4-6'
Culture: Best grown in light, but organically rich, well-drained acidic soils in full sun to part-shade. Does not tolerate heavy clay soils. Appreciates some afternoon dappled/part shade. Some protection from high winds may be helpful as well. Prune as needed immediately right after flowering. Flower buds are susceptible to early spring frosts. Hardy in USDA zones 6-8.
Uses: good addition to shrub borders and woodland gardens, early spring bloom
