Common name: red claws, red escallonia
Family:  Escalloniaceae
Leaf: smooth, evergreen, very glossy, alternate, lustrous, oval to lanceolate, serrulate margins on upper half of leaf
Flower: showy, red or crimson tubular flowers, in 1-3" clusters
Height: 6-15; Spread: 4-15'
Habit: evergreen shrub; Form: fountain, mounded
Culture: USDA hardy in zones 8a-9b. It is not very hardy in British Columbia, needing some kind of protection. Best grown in full sun to part shade with shelter/protection from cold drying winds. Best planted in fertile soils that are well drained. Drought tolerant once established. Does not tolerate alkaline soil. In California they grow taller. Hummingbirds love this plant.
Uses: shrub border, hedge, screen, against a wall- especially in coastal regions
