Common name: hybrid camellia
Family: Theaceae
Leaf: elliptic, dark green, with entire margins, alternate, shiny
Flower: ranging from semi-double to double, some with showy stamen, some not, colors ranging from white, to light pink, dark pink and reddish-pink, some having flowers that resemble peonies! Flowers in March.
Habit: evergreen shrub; Form: rounded
Height: 8-15'; Spread: 8-12'
Culture: Hardy in USDA zones 7-10. Plant in sun-dappled/part shade in medium moisture, well drained, average soils. Prefers soils leaning towards acidic (5.6-6.5). Prune after flowering in spring. Would benefit from some protection. In areas with frost and cold winds, it should be positioned facing away from the morning sun, as the flower buds are easily damaged.
Uses: Informal hedge, specimen plant, screen.
