Camellia sasanqua

Camellia sasanqua

Common name: sasanqua camellia
Family: Theaceae
Leaf: alternate, evergreen, broad, elliptic, 3-cm long, with a finely serrated margin
Flowers: 5-cm in diameter, with 5-8 white to dark pink petals, flowering in the fall.
Habit: broadleaf, evergreen shrub; Form: oval, irregular, rounded
Height: 8-10' Spread: 8-10
Culture: Hardy in USDA zones 7-10. It is considered not to be super hardy in B.C. Plant in average, medium moisture, well-drained soils in part dappled shade/part sun. Does not like soils that are too wet. Would benefit with some protection (a wall etc.) from winds. 'Yuletide' is an attractive cultivar. Keep in mind this camellia makes a big mess when the petals fall!
Uses: screen, specimen, can even be espaliered, lawns in a protected location, background, informal hedge
Origin: China and Japan
