Common name: Otto Luyken laurel
Family: Rosaceae
Leaf: lustrous, oblong, dark green leaves with an erect upright posture, up to 6" long, evergreen
Flower: on upright erect racemes up to 5" long, blooming from leaf axis in April-May.
Fruit:  non-showy black drapes ripe king mid-summer, inedible
Height: 3-4'; Spread: 6-8'
Habit: spreading evergreen shrub; Form: broad-dense, mounding
Culture: Best in moist, organically-rich, well- drained soils in full sun to part shade. Tolerates shade, good drainage is essential. Does not like wet soils. Hardy to USDA zones 6-8. Best to plant in full sun in the cooler areas of its growing zone (USDA 6 for example). Likewise, good to plant in part shade in the hotter areas of its growing range (USDA zone 8). Prune as desired after flowering. Can get quite large without pruning.
Uses: tall hedge or screen, as a solo specimen, en masse, or large woodland groupings. Open woodland, or shade. There are also compact cultivars which are very attractive and popular.
