Leucothoe fontanesiana 'Rainbow'

Leucothoe fontanesiana 'Rainbow'

Common name: 'Rainbow' dog-hobble
Family: Ericaceae
Leaf:  simple, leathery leaves, glossy, up to 10 cm long, lanceolate, mottled with cream and pink colours, with slender, arching reddish branches
Flowers: short recedes of small, bell-shape, cream-coloured flowers under the branches in spring
Height: 3-5'; Spread: 3-5'
Habit: deciduous or evergreen shrub; Form: Fountain-mounding shrub
Culture: Best in medium moisture, in relatively fertile soil in part shade. It is fairly slow-growing, but can be trimmed or pruned down as desired, and will grow back. Can also be planted in the semi shade of a specimen tree, and the lighter colors of the' Rainbow' will draw ones eyes to that area. Can tolerate full shade as well. Hardy to USDA zones 5-9. Benefits from regular watering if the heat is extreme, or soil is getting dry. For this reason, a mulch may be beneficial to keep roots moist.
Uses: Under-planting of a specimen tree, erosion control on a slope, woodland garden, low border, hedge, containers, cut flowers, etc.
Origin: Garden origin
