Rubus spectabilis


Common name: salmonberry
Family: Rosaceae
Leaf: trifoliate, compound leaf, leaf margins toothed
Flower: 2-3 cm in diameter, with 5 pinkish-purple petals, blooming early spring to early summer
Fruit: maturing in late summer to early autumn, resembling a large orange-red raspberry. Aggregate of drupes
Habit: rhizomatous, deciduous shrub; Form: mounding
Height: up to 6'; Spread: up to 3 feet
Culture: Easily grown in good, well-drained loamy soil in sun or part-shade. Tolerant of and poor soils- often found growing on roadsides. Grows well in the shade of trees. Hardy in USDA zones 4-8. Can spread, and be invasive. Stems fruit in their second year and then dies. Prune old dead canes in spring.
Uses: good for a woodland, large area
Origin: West coast of north America
