Common name: Algerian iris
Family: Iridaceae
Leaf: copious, dark green, narrowly-linear leaves
Flower: fragrant, deep violet flowers, 5-8 cm in width, the falls marked with white deep yellow at the base, blooming in winter
Habit: evergreen rhizomatous perennial; Form: clumping
Height: up to 1.5'; Spread: up to1.5'
Culture: Plant in a protected location, near a house for example. Best planted in full sun, in sharply drained, alkaline soils. Keep in mind this plant is non-showy in the summer- just leaves. Divide mid-summer to early autumn.
Uses: winter interest, perennial garden where it will be visible in the winter. A planting close to the house.
Origin: Greece, Turkey, Western Syria, Tunisia
