Camellia lutchuensis


Common name: fragrant camellia
Family: Theaceae
Leaf: oval-lanceolate, glossy, dark green ,alternate, serrated, evergreen
Flowers: showy, white flowers with showy yellow stamens produced in early spring, beginning in late winter to early spring. Buds are quite attractive and showy as well- with blushed pink stains on them.
Fruit: capsules
Habit: upright, open, spreading evergreen shrub ; Form: wide rounded
Height: 8-15'; Spread: 10-12'
Culture: Hardy in USDA zones 8-9. Grow in part sun to part shade, with midday shade being the most essential. Medium, consistent, slightly acidic soils are a must. Good drainage is essential. Slow growing, slow to establish, shallow rooted. Mulching helps to protect the roots. Prune after flowering and before new growth begins in the spring. 
Uses: Best in a mixed woodland boarder or planted as a specimen. Can even be espaliered. 
Origin: Southern China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan's Ryukyu islands.
