Leaf: acaulescent, basal leaves are palmate, deeply lobed, somewhat waxy, dark green with 7-9 leaflets, evergreen in moderate winters
Flowers:appear singly on thick stems which usually do not rise above the foliage. Cup-shaped, rose-like white flowers (up to 3" diameter), with crowns of conspicuously contrasting yellow stamens. Blooming winter in warmer regions and Feb-March in colder regions.
Habit: evergreen perennial; Form: clumping
Height: 0.75-1; Spread: 1-1.5'
Culture: Best grown in organically-rich, well-drained soils in part shade to full shade. Best located in an area protected from cold winter winds. Takes several years to establish. Hardy in USDA zones 3-8. Self-seeds, albeit sparingly, in optimal conditions.
Uses: woodland garden, understory planting, containers.
