Leaf: usually opposite, oblong or linear leaves, up to 1.5" long, some varieties have soft, grayish leaves, others light green, and some with crinkled bright green foliage
Flowers: solitary, panicles, racemes, or clusters, 5 petals, usually in the shades of strong yellows, oranges or pinks, stigma is showy usually
Fruit: capsule containing many seeds
Habit: usually the genus is made up of low-growing sub-shrubs or shrubs, but there are a few annual or perennial herbaceous varieties
Height: 0.5- 1'; Spread: 2-3'
Culture: Best grown in full sun, in dry, alkaline, rocky and/or sandy soil. Best not to grow in organically rich soils. Does not need alot of water once established. Generally are winter hardy in USDA zones 5-7, though in zone 5, they are not entirely winter hardy, so do well with a mulch. Likes cool summers and warm winters. Best to shear after flowering to encourage denser, fuller growth.
Uses: In a perennial garden, as a low border, in rock gardens, xeriscaping, containers.
