Buxus microphylla
Common name: Japanese box, littleleaf box
Family: Buxaceae
Leaf: small leaves, less than 18mm long, ovate, green to dark green, opposite
Height: up to 3'; Spread: up to 5'
Habit: evergreen shrub; Form: rounded
Culture: Succeeds in a wide variety of soil types, provided it is well-drained. Hardy to USDA zones 6-10. Consistent, medium moisture is a must, especially when establishing, and are therefore permanently irrigation-dependant plants. Best in full sun to part-shade. It is also fairly slow-growing. Susceptible to leaf blight- a fungal disease where you seen "dead spots". If you see leaf blight, hand prune the affected area, down 1-2". If you want to shear the Buxus, be sure to prune out by hand the leaf blight first before shearing, as shearing can spread around the fungal spores. Sterilize secateurs after removing leaf blight. Pruning down to old wood is ok, but keep in mind, new growth will take several years to come back from that spot.
Uses: hedge, low hedge, in a formal garden, topiary, balls, container
Origin: Easter Asia, China, Japan
